BIPOC PLAYWRIGHTS PROJECT

I recently created the BIPOC Playwrights Project, a website dedicated to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) playwrights, with a generous grant from the Lecturer Teaching Fellows Program at UC Berkeley. The site, which has over a hundred cross-referenced playwrights, has been serving as a resource for theater educators and practitioners across the country looking for a broader choice of texts and materials decentralizing the white dominated theatre canon. I designed the site to link directly to these texts within our library system for our faculty and students at UC Berkeley. This has led to increased representation of BIPOC authored texts in acting classes, a rich resource for BIPOC actors to find monologues for themselves, and a wider choice for directors and theatre wishing to produce BIPOC authored plays. I have also had the honor of being in contact with BIPOC playwrights who contact me directly to be included on the site and have been building relationships with other universities and theaters working toward their own goals of equity and inclusion.
